Thank you for reading this post, don’t forget to subscribe!Common Misconceptions About Washing Jeans:
- Even a mother who runs a professional dry cleaners finds it hard to understand why her grown son is in the bathtub, carefully stomping on his jeans to water-wash them.
- “Never wash your jeans” – Levi’s CEO once said this (though he later changed his stance to “just wash them in the shower”).
- Customer: “Please dry clean these, don’t water-wash them.” (Reality: Everyday water-soluble stains—especially from food, drinks, and coffee—will not come out at all. Moreover, odors in the crotch area will remain or even smell worse.)
- Cleaner: “Yes, sir.” (Reality: Because the dry cleaning solvent failed to remove those stains, the cleaner has no choice but to wash them again with water anyway.)
- Dry cleaning shrinks the Jacron leather patch on the back of the jeans. Even Levi’s paper Jacron patches get worn out and torn. (The cleaner must either detach and resew it before washing, or return it saying “that’s just what happens in dry cleaning,” leaving the customer to deal with it.)
Spinning jeans at high speeds during a regular washer’s cycle creates permanent, sharp wrinkles that can never be ironed out. (If you dry them in a regular dryer like this, those creases lock into permanent white streaks, resulting in a serious cleaning accident.)

The Safe Water-Washing Method for Jeans (Mild Wash Process):
For removing most everyday stains, wet cleaning is overwhelmingly more efficient and effective. Furthermore, wet cleaning is far superior and safer than dry cleaning when it comes to preventing dye bleeding and preserving the original color of the fabric.
The general public often mistakenly believes that water fading causes colors to run and that dry cleaning solvents preserve color. From a luxury garment care expert’s perspective, however, the exact opposite is true. Textile dyes are actually far more vulnerable to oil-based dry cleaning solvents.
Because dry cleaning is a “dry-to-dry” process, you cannot visually monitor the dye bleeding while it happens, making it seem safe. In reality, it strips away significantly more dye than washing in cold water.
Additionally, using standard alkaline detergents (which many cleaners still rely on heavily) causes severe color loss and leaves the fabric incredibly stiff.
Furthermore, dry cleaning used to be the preferred choice simply because many cleaners still rely on aggressive, heavy-agitation washers. However, with the introduction of premium all-in-one neutral detergents like our Silkner and advanced, specialized wet cleaning machines, washing with water is rapidly becoming the new industry standard.
- Add twice the amount of our all-in-one neutral detergent, Cm (Silkner), compared to standard loads, and **run a short wash-only cycle first**. While modern wet cleaning washers eliminate the risk of creasing, conventional commercial front-load washers can cause severe, unwanted wrinkles. Adjust your washer’s cycle, or stick to a wash-only cycle if the mechanical action is too aggressive.
- Next, remove the unspun garments from the washer, transfer them to a top-load mild washer, and spin them for just about 10 seconds. The goal here is a minimal spin-time simply to extract heavy dripping water.
- Hang them straight up to air-dry overnight. In Southern California, you won’t even need a fan, though running a small fan can be helpful depending on your local climate.
- Tumble them for about 5 minutes in the morning to break the stiffness and soften the fabric.
- Hand them over to the presser. If the fabric feels too resistant during pressing, spraying our Dm (Rinsner) while ironing delivers excellent results.
- Inspect the color tone and any remaining spots, then finish the garment using Dd (Darcner).
The staple items that bring customers to a dry cleaner from miles away—and keep them coming back long-term—are white dress shirts and premium jeans. Even if it means charging a premium rate over standard trousers, you must deliver flawless quality for the jeans your clients cherish and invest in.
Impeccable color retention, a fresh scent, and a soft finish can all be mastered through our all-in-one neutral Cm (Silkner) detergent + Mild Wash process.
